The Hubris Building located on Gay Street in Downtown Knoxville dates to the early 1900’s. While originally three stories on the front façade and a basement accessed from the rear, it “dropped” to two with the Gay Street viaduct development. The existing building’s internal divisions were completely reworked with the new design.
The main storefronts along Gay street became single-story, commercial tenant spaces. The upper level remained as rental apartments, but they all received new two-bedroom layouts with open floor plans.
The lower level (the original Gay Street) and the basement are now two-story apartments accessed from a shared courtyard behind the building. The door opens to an open kitchen and living room. The stair features a custom steel structure and heavy timber treads. The master bedroom, bathroom, and a flex room is found upstairs.
Special care was taken by the developer and contractor to keep exposed brick on the interior spaces for historic character, and new solid surface countertops and custom cabinets finish out the interior.
